Overview

With turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and centuries of Swahili culture, Zanzibar is more than a tropical paradise — it’s a sensory journey through history, flavor, and natural beauty. Unforgettable Escapades invites you to explore this Indian Ocean jewel your way — slow, soulful, and sun-drenched.

7 Days

Why Zanzibar

  • Zanzibar pairs white sand beaches and warm, clear water with a historic old town that has stood for centuries.
  • Coral reefs around Mnemba Atoll rank among the best snorkeling and diving sites on the East African coast.
  • The island’s spice trade history is still visible in its plantations, markets, and the architecture of Stone Town.
  • Zanzibar combines easily with a Tanzania safari, so many travelers add a few beach days at the end of a longer trip.

About the Island

Zanzibar sits just off Tanzania’s coast in the Indian Ocean, and the island splits fairly cleanly between its beach resorts on the north and east coasts and Stone Town on the west, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets, carved wooden doors, and a mix of Swahili, Arab, Persian, and European architecture built up over centuries of trade. Beyond the coastline, Zanzibar’s interior holds spice plantations growing clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg, crops that shaped the island’s economy long before tourism did.

Jozani Forest, in the island’s south, protects one of the last patches of native forest and is the easiest place to spot the red colobus monkey, a species found only on Zanzibar and nowhere else in the wild.

Popular Routes to the Summit

  • Marangu Route – the only route with hut accommodation instead of tents, and the most gradual approach, which makes it a common pick for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
  • Machame Route – a scenic, camp-based route up the southern side of the mountain, known for strong acclimatization and consistently high summit rates.
  • Lemosho Route – one of the longer, quieter approaches, with wide views over forest and alpine terrain before it joins the southern circuit.
  • Shira Route – starts at a higher trailhead than most other routes, so the ascent is slower from day one, which suits trekkers prioritizing acclimatization.
  • Rongai Route – approaches from the drier northern side, gentler underfoot and less crowded than the southern routes.
  • Umbwe Route – the steepest, most direct line to the summit, built for trekkers who already have high-altitude experience and want a harder climb.

  • White sand beaches and swimming in calm, turquoise water at Nungwi.
