    About the Parks

    Tanzania’s park system spans a wide range of ecosystems, so an itinerary here rarely repeats the same landscape twice. The Serengeti’s plains support the annual wildebeest migration, one of the largest land mammal movements on Earth. Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera, packs an unusually dense concentration of wildlife into a contained space. Tarangire, Ruaha, and Nyerere National Park are known for large elephant herds moving among ancient baobab trees, while Nyerere also offers boat safaris along the Rufiji River, something few other parks in the region can match. Lake Manyara is one of the few places to spot tree-climbing lions, a behavior rarely seen elsewhere in Africa.

    Kilimanjaro National Park, home to the mountain itself, protects the ecosystems climbers pass through on the way to the summit and sits at the edge of this wider park network.

    How to Get There

    Kilimanjaro International Airport and Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam are the two main gateways, with Arusha serving as the usual base for northern circuit safaris covering Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. Southern circuit parks such as Ruaha and Nyerere are typically reached by a short domestic flight from Dar es Salaam.
