Why Trek to Everest Base Camp

  • Everest Base Camp sits at the foot of the world’s highest mountain, and reaching it is one of trekking’s most recognized achievements without requiring technical climbing skills.
  • The trail runs through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting the Khumbu region’s forests, glaciers, and wildlife.
  • Sherpa villages along the route, including Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, offer a close look at Himalayan mountain culture and Buddhist tradition.
  • Kala Patthar, a short side trek near Base Camp, gives closer views of Everest’s summit than Base Camp itself.

About the Trek

The trail to Everest Base Camp begins at Lukla, reached by a short mountain flight from Kathmandu, and follows the Dudh Koshi River through pine forest and Sherpa farmland before climbing into the high Khumbu Valley. Namche Bazaar, the region’s main trading town, sits at 3,440 m and is usually where trekkers spend the first acclimatization day. Above Namche, the trail passes Tengboche Monastery, one of the most significant Buddhist sites in the Khumbu, with Ama Dablam and Everest visible from its courtyard on clear days.

The final approach to Base Camp crosses moraine and glacier terrain rather than snow, and the camp itself is a seasonal staging ground rather than a fixed settlement, busiest during spring climbing season. Most trekkers climb Kala Patthar, a nearby viewpoint at 5,545 m, for a clearer look at Everest’s summit than the angle from Base Camp allows.

Highlights

  • Sagarmatha National Park, the world’s highest trekking destination, home to yaks, Himalayan tahr, and, at higher elevations, snow leopards.
  • Views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse from Kala Patthar.
  • Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, the region’s main Sherpa trading town and its most significant monastery.
  • Suspension bridge crossings over the Dudh Koshi River, some more than 100 meters above the water.
  • Close-up views of the Khumbu Glacier and icefall near Base Camp itself.
  • High-altitude sunrise and sunset views from Base Camp and the surrounding campsites.

How to Get There

Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu is the main gateway to Nepal, with most international routes connecting through Delhi, Doha, Dubai, or Bangkok. From Kathmandu, a short 30–40 minute flight lands at Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport, the starting point for the trek. Road access to Lukla exists but takes several days and is rarely used by trekkers on a fixed schedule.
